What will it cost to index your book?
There are, in general, three methods of pricing for indexing a book.
The most common is per indexable page. Indexable pages do not usually include front matter (foreword, acknowledgements, etc.) or back matter, unless it is requested. It does include charts, graphs, tables, photographs, illustrations, or partial pages. The per page rate is applicable when the book is in final form and there will be no changes to the pagination. The cost per page will depend on the density of the text (average number of entries per page) and if it is a rush job, as well as other factors. Do you want a single index or do you want separate indexes (author, subject, scriptural reference, etc.)? My per page rate ranges from $2.50 - $6.00. If you will send me a representative chapter (not an introductory one) I will index it at no charge and give you a bid for indexing your book.
Sometimes an hourly rate is more feasible. For instance, if the index is to be embedded, the book is not yet in its final form when the index is created, so a per page rate would be difficult to determine. Or if there are pagination or manuscript changes in a book that has been indexed at a per page rate, the necessary index changes will be done at an hourly rate. My hourly rate is $45. Note: After I have completed the index and submitted it to you for approval, if there are corrections in formatting or editing changes that need to be made, I will provide up to two hours at no charge.
The third method is per entry. One entry consists of a main heading, a subheading, and one locator or one locator range. The rate for this method would be determined by negotiation.
